Requirements

Getting a Thai driving license follows familiar steps:

• Eligibility: Be at least 18 years old, in good health, and familiar with Thai driving laws.
• Documents Needed:
  • Application form

  • Optional: International driver’s license or home country’s license.

Residence Certificate

Obtaining a residence certificate is straightforward. Visit your local immigration office with passport, visa and a proof of your residency in Thailand  and get it within a day.

Important Note: Recent changes may affect using a work permit for this purpose. Ensure you have the right documentation.

International Driver’s License or Home Country’s License (Optional)

Having an international or home country’s license streamlines the process. Just ensure it's in English or translated and certified by the embassy.

Tests

The process involves three tests spread across three days:

Physical test

• Color Blindness Test:
  • Stand in front of a mock traffic light.
  • Identify colors: red, green, or yellow.
  • Use Thai if possible, but English is acceptable.
  • Remember to call the "slow down" light yellow, not orange.
• Depth Perception Test:
  • Move a vertical bar inside a lit box.
  • Align it with a stationary vertical bar 10 meters away.
  • Lighting conditions may affect the difficulty.
• Reflex Test:
  • Sit behind simulated brake and gas pedals.
  • Accelerate until green LED lights illuminate.
  • Hit the brake before LEDs turn red.
• Peripheral Test:
  • Put nose against testing station.
  • Identify colors on left and right sides.
  • Maintain eye contact with the officer.

Theory test

• The process involves watching a video and taking a theory test.
• The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 45 correctly to pass.

Driving test

• Driving forward and backward (counts as two stations)
• Driving along a curb and stopping at a stop sign
• Parallel parking and exiting (counts as two stations)

If you fail the practical driving test, you can retake it again after three business days. And you only have to redo the station you failed, not all three (unless you fail all three). 

However, you must pass all the stations in the practical driving test within 90 days, or you have to repeat the entire process.

Converting Your License

Converting an international or home country’s license is hassle-free. No theory or practical tests are required. Here’s how:

• Submit documents to any Department of Land Transport Office.
• Undergo required tests.
• Pay THB305 for a two-year temporary license.

Renewing Your License

Renewing is a simple process similar to obtaining it initially, minus the tests. Here’s how:

• Gather required documents.
• Undergo vision tests.
• Pay THB505 for a five-year license.

Important Renewal Notes:

• You can renew three months before expiry.
• For licenses expired over a year, a theory test is necessary.
• If expired over three years, both theory and practical tests are required.
